SCHOOL GUIDELINES

Safe School Program

The goal of St. Patrick Catholic School is to provide a positive school climate for our students. To assist in achieving this goal, the following guidelines are being implemented concerning aggressive behavior incidents. Aggressive behavior includes but is not limited to Name-Calling, Ridiculing and Bullying. Bullying is a persistent pattern of aggressive, physical, verbal, and/or psychological behavior. While inappropriate/hurtful behavior needs to be stopped, the objective is a positive change in the student’s behavior.

Aggressive Behavior Report Form

Safe School Guidelines

Incident Reporting
• If a student feels that another student(s) or other person is acting aggressively toward them or another student, the student and/or parent should report the incident to the homeroom teacher or principal. Please use the incident reporting forms that will be in each homeroom and in the office. The incident reporting form covers regular school hours, anytime on school premises and at school sponsored activities. A copy of the form is attached. Once an incident has been verified by the principal, parents will be contacted.
• The following is the order of consequences in the Safe School Program. Please note that the severity of the incident and the student’s behavior history can lead to more serious consequences on the first occurrence and in any additional occurrences.

First Occurrence: Aggressive Behavior Incident
1. Parent Conference with principal
2. Student receives disciplinary notification and other consequences as deemed appropriate by the principal.
3. Student completes:
Self-Reflection activity
Restorative Activity if needed
Note: If the first occurrence is hitting/fighting with another student, the student initiating
the incident will receive an in school suspension.

Second Occurrence: Aggressive Behavior Incident
1. Parent Conference with principal
2. Student receives detention and other consequences as
deemed appropriate by the principal.
3. Student completes:
Self-Reflection Activity
Social Learning Activity
Restorative Activity if needed
4. There is a meeting with the School Intervention Team (Principal, Assistant
Principal and Teachers). Then a formal Intervention Plan is developed for the student by the team.

Third Occurrence: Aggressive Behavior Incident
1. Parent Conference with principal
2. Student receives an in school suspension and other
consequences as deemed appropriate by the principal.

NOTE: Parent support for the plan is desired but not required. St. Patrick Catholic School has an obligation to develop a response to aggressive behavior, and parent disagreement with the plan, either in whole or in part does not relieve our school of its responsibility to maintain a safe school climate.

Additional Occurrence: In the event a student is involved in an aggressive behavior incident while working on the formal intervention plan, the student will receive an in school and out of school suspension. Also, the intervention plan will be changed to indicate that any additional occurrences could result in the student’s expulsion from school.

Safe Plan Notes

  • Our guidelines use specific strategies such as reflective activities, social learning activities, and restorative activities to help students who have been involved in aggressive behavior incidents. Reflective activities encourage the student to think about what has happened and the role he/she played in the incident. (Example: Writing assignments and scripture reflection). Social learning activities engage the student in positive interactions with other students, and provides the opportunity to reconcile with the student that has been mistreated. (Example: Writing apology letter). Restorative activities – allow the student to make reparation for any harm the student may have done to another.
  • Positive Reinforcement: Students in Grades K – 8 will be recognized in different ways for positive behavior.
  • Please go over the guidelines with your child. Your child’s teacher will review them at school.
  • The Aggressive Behavior occurrence process covers one school year. The student starts over at the beginning of the next school year. However, if a student has a number of aggressive behavior incidents the principal can carry over the occurrences from the previous school year. Parents will be informed if this is taking place.
